"Kinsey has the perfect job as the team leader in a remote research outpost. She loves the isolation and the way that temptations from the civilian world are far out of reach in the desert. When her crew discovers a mysterious specimen buried deep in the sand, Kinsey breaks quarantine and brings it into the hab. But the longer it's inside, the more her carefully controlled life begins to unravel. Temptation has found her after all, and it can't be ignored any longer. One by one, Kinsey's team realizes the thing they're studying is in search of a new host - and one of them is the perfect candidate..."
Anyone who knows me, knows I love a book about weird sex stuff and this is one of the weirdest I've read in a while. I saw a review that referred to this as Weird Girl Smut (TM) and it is probably that.
It's got depth, though, too.
It's very queer and horny, a dive into the oddity and queerness in nature, and an exploration of a very unusual kink. But more than anything it's just really weird and fun. It's completely unlike anything else I've read which is a really rare thing for me to be able to say.
This wasn't a perfect book - jumping back and forth between "then" and "now" in each chapter did throw me at times and didn't always feel necessary, though I also liked it a lot of the time - but it was just kind of perfect for me.
I loved the claustrophobia and the elements of body horror. I loved the queer found family vibe of this little small budget lab in the middle of nowhere. I also really loved the ending, though I'm curious what others thought of it so if you've read it I'd love to hear your thoughts on it and/or the book as a whole. I feel like good erotic horror is pretty rare so I hope Sarah Gailey does more along these lines at some point. I also loved one of their previous books, Just Like Home, which I heartily recommend. Let me know if I should read more of their books!
